''Be careful and Watch out: Here is a very hot contender for "Newcomer of the Year". Aszension, from Canada, convinces us with their own interpretation of Progressive Rock across the board. Produced entirely as an in-house début, which they have managed to solely keep instrumental, aside from the bonus track, but more on that later.
In 2007, Kevin Thiessen and Calvin Shiu launched work on their début album, elegantly intertwining progressive and metallic sounds together with ambient soundscapes. While Kevin's special attack is on guitar, bass, keyboards and mandolin, Calvin gives Aszension through the use of his Shamisen (a Japanese style guitar), an exotic touch to the dish. What can I say, the mix works well.
The dynamic interplay on the drums by Kyle Sheppard fires up the metal factor. On the one hand they are not too dominant, yet on the other, they always make sure that the tracks do not get lost in a World music ''gesäusel''(whisper). The result is really exciting and relaxing instrumental progressive music ending with a crisp new interpretation of the classic Gentle Giant song "Playing the Game", featuring guest vocalist Geoff Ross. He lends his voice very convincingly. A brilliant finale!
This excellently produced album can be purchased as either a CDR or MP3 version directly from the band ( www.aszension.com/store ) or ordered from Empire Music ( www.empire-music.de )
