Manticornio nomination for Best Début Album (2012).
''What a pleasant surprise, to be presented with the Canadian band Aszension and their official debut album. The band was shaped by Kevin Thiessen: 7 and 12 string electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar, mandolin, synthesizers, programming, voice, percussion, composing, arranging, production, engineering, mixing and mastering. Calvin Shiu: Shamisen, co-production and engineering. Kyle Sheppard: Drum kit. Evan Arnott: 7 string and midi electric guitars (tracks 2 and 11). Geoff Ross: Vocals (track 13) and David Philippe: Fretless and fretted bass guitars (tracks 5 and 13).
The band focuses on fusing progressive metal and rock with a wide range of instrumentation, ethnic passages and musical styles. They are quite original, and the quality of their graphics provide confidence that this is a serious project and very well done.
''AsZension'' is one of those progressive rock albums you hear with smooth and pleasant surprises. While the motives of metal are present, they are not outweighed by the more ethnic timbres, which are contrasted with fast, rhythmic metal guitar and technical bass playing. (suddenly sounding like "oriental progressive"). This provides a concept that is ideal for low-volume listening. Imagine a misty landscape, where dancers interpret a typical battle between good and evil, and whose movements are abstracted in the haze.
